VarnaesA geological interesting nature reserve and a nice coast.
Langdyssen KempestenenIn the middle of the woods north from Varnaes lay this big dolmen. No road signs are present, so it's difficult to find without information. The big size of the dolmen makes it difficult to put it on picture. The kerbstone ring is rather intact. A part of the covering hill has disappeared. In the hill's centre a big capstone covers a small grave chamber.
The first “Danish” farmers constructed this long barrow between 3500 and 2500 B.C. Probably it served as last resting place for important people. Langdyssen Kempestenen can be compared with the long barrows at Blommeskobbel (Als, Denmark), and with some "hunebedden" in Drenthe (Netherlands) and Emsland (Germany). The infopanel only gives general information; "Kempestenen" remains a mystery.
During the last months of WOII arises the idea to restore the Varnaes dolmen. The project started in June 1945. In summer 1945 this dolmen was seen as a symbol of Danish independence and uniqueness... Nature reserveThe headland north of Varnaes is an interesting nature reserve full of diversity. The landscape was once formed by ice. Now it is a fertile landscape whit a remarkable flora and fauna. If you are lucky, you can find the brochure "Varnaes Storemose" in the info kiosk at Varnaes. The booklet gives a lot of information, alas only in Danish, and contains a handy map of the nature reserve.
The coast near Varnaes, on the borders of the "Aabenraa Fjord", is very quit. On the stone beaches you can find flint to make your own tools... 'Back to top' - Thy (= Next page) |
